Another Mass Shooting Tragedy: No, Gun Control is Not the Answer
Yesterday's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, is the forty-third mass shooting in the month of May alone. Early reports say the shooter was an 18-year-old man who opened fire in an elementary school, taking the lives of nineteen children and three teachers. This tragedy happened on the heels of the mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY, where ten people were killed and three more injured. Mass shootings are occurring more and more frequently, taking the lives of innocent people and children, thereby furthering the division in America. Left-leaning politicians and public figures have taken to social media within minutes of the tragic shooting to politicize this senseless act and demand gun control. While it is sickening to watch the immediate politicization of mass shootings, often without offering words of mourning and empathy, gun control will not stop mass shootings from occurring. In fact, gun control could wildly exacerbate it.
Democratic policies like defunding the police, banning the death penalty, as well as prison and bail reform have only sent criminal minds the message of zero consequences. It is obvious that a get out of jail free card coupled with a lack of police investigation and being punished for crime has emboldened and encouraged crimes and mass shootings. 38 out of 50 states either do not have the death penalty or have not executed in at least five years. States like New York, California, and Illinois have rampant crime and homelessness which are growing more and more lethal. The left’s abhorrent hypocrisy regarding the death penalty, in which they favor killing innocent unborn children over mass shooters and violent criminals, is out of control. There was a time when if one committed a violent crime, they were hanged in the street in the city square. While this may be a less humane punishment for the “tolerant” left, cities were safer, and school shootings just did not exist.
While I can understand the surface cruelty of the death penalty, as a society, we really need to focus on what is realistic to curb these mass shootings and what is not. The 2nd amendment of the US Constitution clearly states, “A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” I think the key wording here is “A well regulated Militia.” By definition, a militia is “a military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency.” This means that civilians are capable and legally able to act as an addition to the United States Military in the event of an emergency. Considering mass shootings should constitute as an emergency and an armed threat against citizens and, specifically, children.
Yes, each state has somewhat varying gun laws regarding concealed and carry laws. But the US Constitution allows all citizens the right to bear arms. Every legally purchased gun requires a background check. In fact, the New York Times points out that 77% of mass shooters purchase the guns used legally. In other words, the “gun control” requirements that the left suggests would not prevent guns from being purchased legally because those laws are already in place. Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), it is not transparent, nor does it show up on a background check. Therefore, when a person with a diagnosed mental illness attempts, successfully or not, to buy and use a gun, it is not always possible to prevent someone with mental illness from buying and using a gun. Sadly, until we re-institutionalize the mentally ill, we cannot prevent them from buying or using a firearm.
Restricting firearms from being purchased and used by law-abiding citizens would only make mass shootings worse. The fewer trained and armed citizens there are to defend themselves and others, the worse mass shootings will become. The only way to stop mass shootings, considering the death penalty is no longer a humane and acceptable punishment, is to arm teachers, school staff, and law-abiding citizens to defend the lives of themselves and others. As the daughter of a disabled, retired, and trained US Navy Sailer and stepdaughter of a retired police officer, my fathers would gladly accept a position to defend children in schools. Why not hire them to protect and serve our schools and children? Alternatively, the more trained and armed citizens in the schools and general public, the safer we are as a society. Recently, in Florida, an armed homeowner killed an intruder, leading the town’s sheriff to promote homeowners to do the same. So why not do the same for schools and public areas? Why wouldn’t a potential mass murderer be deterred by a fully armed and trained staff and/or citizens? The truth, I am afraid, comes down to the left’s tyrannical desire to disarm the United States citizens as part of a bigger picture, control. After all, the 2nd amendment was created so the people could defend the country against a tyrannical government.
